A Calling from the Heart –
Mama Gudrun’s Story Is Now Available as a Book
Sometimes an extraordinary story begins with a single decision.
A vacation on Kenya’s south coast turned into a life’s work for the Dürr family from Ingstetten. The stark contrast between the luxurious hotels and beaches here and the extreme poverty and misery of the many street children and orphans there moved Gudrun and Edmund Dürr to completely change the course of their family of five’s life. They moved to Kenya’s south coast to build a children’s home and village in Msambweni and to help children in need.
In 1997, Gudrun began building the first children’s village on a privately purchased plot of land, and in March 2000, the first eight children were admitted.
This extraordinary story has now been published as a book, and we get to accompany Gudrun on her journey, at the end of which she becomes the mother of more than 80 children.
Together with journalist Wiebke Bromberg, Gudrun speaks candidly about her extraordinary journey—about courage, uncertainty, challenges, small and grand twists of fate, everyday miracles, and hope—and about the strength to never give up.
The result is far more than just a life story: *
* It is a testament to genuine compassion, a plea for community, and a source of inspiration for all who believe that a single person can indeed change the world.
“An impressive life story—the fact that someone has the courage to radically change their own life in order to help others. And that an entire family pitches in to make it a success. An inspiring book about an extraordinary life.”
“A moving book about a magnificent project that leaves readers in awe: It embodies so much courage, so much perseverance. And the best part is: It works!”
“Is Gudrun Dürr naive, or is she simply incredibly tenacious—to build a children’s home in Kenya against all odds, and later an entire organization that creates jobs? She not only held on to her dream but steadily expanded it. That is what this very personal book is about—it shows that much more is always possible than we think.”
With 316 pages, 75 color photos, and many personal insights, the book takes readers on a journey that moves and inspires them.
